Utumishi Girls Fire Incident

Government Spokesperson Hon. Sen. (Dr.) Isaac M. Mwaura has said the Government received with deep shock and profound sadness reports of a tragic fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where several students were feared dead while others sustained injuries.
Speaking on behalf of the Government and the people of Kenya, Mwaura conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families, parents, guardians, teachers, and students affected by the tragedy.
He stated that the Government had immediately activated emergency response teams comprising officers from the National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, County Disaster Units, medical personnel, and fire response teams to contain the situation and provide urgent assistance.
According to the Government Spokesperson, injured students were receiving treatment at nearby health facilities as efforts continued to account for all learners and ensure their safety.
Mwaura assured parents and the country that every available resource was being deployed to manage the situation swiftly and professionally, adding that Government officials were already on the ground coordinating rescue efforts and supporting affected families.
He urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information or disturbing images on social media, noting that such actions could cause further trauma to affected families as investigations into the cause of the fire continued.
Mwaura further said the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, together with other relevant agencies, were working closely to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure appropriate action was taken.
He added that the Government stood in solidarity with the students, teachers, and families affected by the tragedy, and noted that further updates would be communicated through official Government channels as more verified information became available.
